Schematic of OsteoSense: biphosphonate fluorescence agents target hydroxyapatite
About hydroxyapatite
Development and maintenance of the skeleton depends upon a balance between osteoblast and osteoclast activity. Changes in this balance are characteristic of numerous skeletal disease states.
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is the major mineral product of osteoblasts and a biomarker for osteoblast activity. OsteoSense 750 and OsteoSense 680 target hydroxyapatite (exposed during times of bone turnover), binding with high affinity, to enable in vivo detection and monitoring of skeletal changes that occur during either bone growth or bone resorption.
